Coming in September 2026

The Postsecondary Teaching with Technology Collaborative’s Self-Directed Learning Instructional Model has been – and continues to be – a vehicle for learning. Our research and development over the past five years contributed much to the field’s understanding of how to support college students’ self-directed learning in online courses; at the same time, our work raised questions, identified gaps, and sparked ideas for future directions.

This Learning Agenda – expected in September 2026 – shares insights from the Collaborative’s research and development efforts, identifies critical knowledge gaps, and prioritizes questions for investigation under four thematic areas:

  • Design and Development of the SDL Instructional Model
  • Implementation of the SDL Instructional Model
  • Measurement of SDL Skills and Mindsets
  • Impact of the SDL Instructional Model

We encourage researchers, college leaders, and faculty, to explore the Learning Agenda to help guide future investigation and catalyze targeted evidence-building activities that further our understanding of low-lift practical strategies to improve students’ SDL and success in online courses.
