Don’t miss our session: Facilitating Positive Student Help-Seeking Experiences in Online Courses
Monday, March 18, 2024, 11:30 am – 12:30 pm PT
In this session, community college instructors will learn about the reasons students avoid asking for help, particularly in STEM courses. Research has linked such avoidance to students’ experiences of discrimination and marginalization, but studies show that students who seek help have better outcomes and experiences. This session shares student perspectives gathered from the work of the Postsecondary Teaching with Technology Collaborative, a research and capacity-building center sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education aimed at improving how faculty members support students’ self-directed learning skills and success in online STEM courses. We will share findings based on interviews with 11 students and discuss ways that online faculty can improve their accessibility and responsiveness to online students.
