Perspectives from Nine Institutions on the Role of Self-Directed Learning Skills in Online Courses
Thursday, May 4, 2023, 5:15-6:45 pm ET
In this paper, we explore how college faculty, staff, and leaders perceive the needs of students in online courses and the strategies they are implementing to support student success in online courses. In particular, we focus on a set of interconnected mindsets and competencies that we collectively refer to as self-directed learning (SDL) skills. Drawing on interview data from nine broad-access postsecondary institutions, we examine stakeholders’ understandings of student learning needs in online courses and the institution’s role in supporting the development of SDL skills. Finally, we identify challenges and opportunities for strengthening instructional supports for SDL skill development in online courses.
