Beyond Engagement: Evidence-Based Strategies for Improving Learning Online

Wednesday, October 22, 3:00-3:45pm MT

Students and faculty both encounter challenges in the online environment, which often manifest and are understood in terms of low student engagement. The Postsecondary Teaching with Technology Collaborative is working to boost online course outcomes and has developed technology-enabled instructional strategies designed to grow students’ self-directed learning (SDL) skills. These skills go beyond “study skills;” they focus on helping students establish a sense of belonging and manage their learning in online settings.

In this session, attendees will learn about a specific and actionable SDL framework to bolster students’ abilities to remain motivated and manage their learning processes in online courses. The presenter will share strategies, research findings, video testimonials, and resources for professional development providers, instructional designers, and others who can support faculty in implementing these strategies. Lastly, participants will engage in an interactive discussion to reflect on whether these SDL strategies effectively address the challenges experienced in online courses, identify any additional supports needed to ensure successful implementation, and determine next steps for applying these strategies in their own settings.
